Treating (not tricking!) customers into Halloween Sales

It’s October already and most Americans are already making plans for the coming Halloween.

Halloween celebration is quickly becoming one of the largest shopping seasons of the year, and people tend to spend more and more money each year on costumes and decorations… and not just Americans in general, we’re talking Canadians…

Check out these statistics:

  • Seven out of ten Canadians celebrating Halloween planned to spend more in 2012 than the $1.5 billion they spent in 2011.
  • More than 40% of Canadians will decorate their yard for Halloween.
  • Almost half of Canadians will dress up in a costume.
  • 11% of Canadians will spend up to $59 to dress up their pet for Halloween.
  • $8 will be spent on Halloween greeting cards in each residence.
  • If your target market is households with children, note that 3,734,401 Canadian kids were at prime trick-or-treating age (5-14) in 2012, according to Statistics Canada.

* Halloween Statistics from Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada:

And also…

  • 40.1% of people surveyed plan to don a costume, up from 33.4% in 2009.
  • 11.5 percent of people donning costumes will dress up their pets as well.
  • 33.3 percent of people will throw/attend a party,
  • nearly three-quarters (72.2%) will hand out candy,
  • 46.3 percent will carve a pumpkin,
  • 20.8 percent will visit a haunted house,
  • 31.7 percent will take their children trick-or-treating, and
  • half (50.1%) of consumers celebrating will decorate their home or yard.

This numbers alone are showing this holiday as an outstanding business opportunity with a market that continues to grow over time, whether your product is Halloween-related or not.

As a start, just getting people to your website is half the battle anyway… take advantage of the number of people hitting the search engines for Halloween topics and use those same keywords linking them to your specific product.

Another way, no matter what sector are you in, is to come up with related topics that can attract searchers to your product. Let’s say you sell illumination and decoration items, you can advise your customers on how to set the best Halloween decoration light show; the same with fashion, using the right color combination, and so on… and you can communicate all those ideas through your blog or by adding a special Holiday section on your website to generate more traffic.

On the other hand, if you really don’t have any Halloween-specific products, you can promote a non-competing partner who does and create a new way of income for your business giving you access to countless affiliates who, in exchange, will promote your products on their websites.

These are just a few ideas to start thinking of the potential of the Halloween market - and how you can turn it into a profitable small business.
